Crime is Increasing Locally
The tightening economy has, and will continue to, effect crime. In the Coachella Valley there has been an increase in both burglaries and robberies.
In some areas of Palm Springs, burglars are breaking into homes through skylights. The skylight is either broken or simply unscrewed and removed. Entry is then made into the home. To help protect against this type of burglary, make sure there is no easy access to the roof. Keep trees trimmed, ladders put away and eliminate other ways a potential burglar could gain access to your roof.
Studies have shown that homes without an alarm system are three times more likely to suffer a burglary. If you have an alarm system, use it every time you leave or home (even “just to run to the store”) and when you go to bed at night. And as simple as it sounds…lock your home when you leave!! Many burglaries are made through unlocked or even open windows or doors.
There also is a rise of robberies and home invasions. Make sure your doors are locked when you’re at home and don’t open the door to admit anyone to your home unless you are sure who they are. Many people are victimized when then open to door to someone that don’t know and the person forces their way in.
Pay attention when you enter and leave your home. If you can, get in your car and lock the car doors before you open the garage door. Do the reverse when you return home, this prevents someone from surprising you by entering in the open garage door.
Lighting is another great deterrent to crime. Keep your home and business well lit during evening hours. Use timers inside your home when you’re away to create the impression someone is home.
